The early separation
Miami’s margin for error disappeared fast. Atlanta’s 67 points in the first half (33 in the first, 34 in the second) put the Heat in chase mode for most of the night, forcing them to play from behind rather than dictate matchups and tempo.
Even when Miami steadied itself, Atlanta kept answering. The teams played even in the third quarter (31-31), but that only preserved the Hawks’ halftime cushion heading into the fourth.
Ball movement was the difference
The cleanest separator was how the two offenses generated looks. Atlanta finished with 34 assists, a level of connectivity that consistently bent Miami’s defense and created advantages without needing to grind through possessions.
Miami, by comparison, logged 25 assists. That’s not a low number in isolation, but against a Hawks group moving the ball at that volume, it left the Heat needing tougher, later-clock solutions more often than they could afford.
Miami’s late surge came too late
The Heat finally won a quarter in the fourth, 34-29, making a push that briefly tightened the feel of the game. But the damage was already done: Atlanta’s first-half scoring and steady third quarter meant Miami had to be nearly perfect down the stretch to flip the script.
Instead, the Hawks closed the door with enough offense to keep the Heat from turning momentum into a true one-possession game.
What it means going forward
For Atlanta, this was a blueprint win: win the first half, keep the ball popping, and let assist-generated offense travel. At 24-27, the Hawks needed nights like this to stabilize their position and build on their LLWWW form with a complete road performance.
For Miami, the takeaway is blunt. Falling behind 67-50 at the half leaves little room for the Heat’s preferred control game to surface. At 27-24, the urgency is less about the final margin and more about eliminating the slow starts that keep turning games into uphill climbs.
