The SEC made clear Monday that it does not support athletes returning to college competition after choosing to sign professional contracts.
The league issued a statement emphasizing its belief that athletes who leave college athletics to pursue professional opportunities “should not then be permitted to return to college competition.”
The statement comes as LSU hopes to sign NFL tight end Dae'Quan Wright, provided he clears waivers. Wright’s situation has brought renewed attention to eligibility questions involving athletes who have entered the professional ranks and may seek a return to NCAA competition.
SEC States Its Position
While the conference did not announce a new rule in the statement, it underscored its stance on maintaining a separation between professional and college competition. The issue centers on whether athletes who have signed pro contracts should be allowed to compete again at the NCAA level.
LSU’s interest in Wright remains contingent on the waiver process. The SEC’s statement signals the conference’s broader concern with preserving existing boundaries around college eligibility.
