The NBA is moving toward a draft lottery reform proposal aimed at reducing incentives for teams to lose games in pursuit of higher draft position.
The proposed changes would expand the lottery, flatten the odds across more teams and penalize the bottom three teams by limiting the advantage they currently receive in the draft order.
Reform Focuses on Anti-Tanking Measures
The draft lottery has long been a central part of the league’s effort to determine the top selections while discouraging intentional losing. This latest proposal would adjust the balance of lottery odds, making it less beneficial for teams at the bottom of the standings to finish with one of the league’s worst records.
By expanding the lottery and spreading odds more evenly, the league would create a system in which more teams have access to top draft positions, while reducing the reward for finishing among the bottom three.
The proposal remains part of the NBA’s broader effort to address competitive balance and protect the integrity of the regular season.
