Mike D’Antoni, one of the most influential offensive minds in modern NBA history, reflected on several landmark moments from his coaching career during Hall of Fame week.

Best known for helping popularize the “seven seconds or less” style with the Phoenix Suns, D’Antoni helped shape an era of pace, spacing and guard-driven offense. His partnership with Steve Nash became one of the defining coach-player combinations of the 2000s, with the Suns producing some of the league’s most explosive attacks.

From Phoenix to Madison Square Garden

D’Antoni also looked back on his time with the New York Knicks, including the electric stretch known as Linsanity. Jeremy Lin’s sudden rise at Madison Square Garden became one of the most memorable storylines of the 2011-12 NBA season, briefly turning the Knicks into the center of the basketball world.

The coach’s career also included a high-profile tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he worked with Kobe Bryant during a period marked by major expectations and difficult circumstances. D’Antoni described that chapter as “doomed,” reflecting the challenges that surrounded his time in Los Angeles.

Across multiple stops, D’Antoni’s teams were associated with tempo, freedom and offensive innovation. His influence remains visible across today’s NBA, where many of the principles central to his best teams have become standard parts of the modern game.
