How it happened

After a low-scoring first half that Western Kentucky controlled 30-23, the game opened up after the break. Middle Tennessee answered with a 37-point second half, but Western Kentucky kept pace with 35 of its own to protect the cushion it built before halftime.

The math of the night was simple: Western Kentucky’s seven-point halftime lead held up even as Middle Tennessee won the second half by two. In a game without overtime, that early separation became the difference.
